Provides safety and security services to students, staff, faculty, and visitors through efficient use of departmental resources. Must be available to work any shift including nights, weekends and holidays on a part-time/call-in status. (Any of the three 8 hour shifts: 1st shift, 7:00 am – 3:00 pm; 2nd shift, 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm; 3rd shift, 11:00 pm - 7:00 am; And/or the two weekend 12 hour shifts: Weekend Days 7:00 am - 7:00 pm; and Weekend Nights, 7:00 pm - 7:00 am) We are seeking applicants with maximum flexibility and the ability to be available on a call-in status.  There are no guarantees on the number of hours per week.  This position will fill in for vacation periods as well as work during the holidays throughout the year which may result in many weeks with a high number of hours worked. Applicants must be capable of working during holidays. Previous Security experience a plus. This position is less than 1,000 hours per year and is not eligible for benefits. This position is non-exempt and a Grade 1.


- Responds to all calls for service and request for assistance from Meredith College students, graduates, staff, faculty and visitors.
- Determines necessary and appropriate actions needed to resolve problems and answers calls for service. May need to resort to applying minimum level force continuum at times.
- Patrols campus by vehicle or foot. Controls access to campus and Greenway during closing hours.
- Responds to any call, fire or intrusion alarms, including any suspicious person(s) and takes appropriate actions.
- Provides traffic direction for large and small events (e.g. Relay for Life/Race for the Cure, Presidents Admission High School Counselors Breakfast, etc).
- Enforces parking regulations, including towing and auto-booting as appropriate. Provides car unlock, jump-start, flat-tire and other automotive services to students, faculty and staff.
- Checks doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure. Turns on and turns off interior and exterior light according to set schedules or special requests. Open and closes gates according to set schedules or in accordance with the needs of Special Events.  Assists in turning on and turning off campus lighting for Special Events and scheduled Sports Activities.


Education & Experience: 
- High School Diploma required. 
- Current Valid NC Driver's License Required.  Clean Driving History Required.
- Previous security experience is a plus.

Skills Needed:

- Ability to use discretion in handling difficult persons and analyze situations likely to be encountered on patrol. 
- Observe and retain names, faces and details of occurrences; Keep detailed notes.  Excellent capability in Report Writing.  Keep detailed Daily Log Sheets and Vehicle Log Sheets up to date.  Turn in all required reports at the end of shift before leaving campus.
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices; interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 
- Understand and correct emergency alarm system.

- Ability to understand and work within the scope of authority; apply policies and procedures.

Key interfaces:

- Responds to calls by students, faculty, staff and visitors. 
- May need to confront hostile or belligerent persons, in an appropriate and professional manner. 

Working conditions & physical demands
- Part of duties may include general office setting with moderate noise level. Moving or lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Patrols campus outdoors and may be exposed to the weather. May be held for additional shifts during inclement weather, if relief is not possible.
- Must have to overcome physical obstacles, such as walls, heights, terraces, embankments, overgrown bushes, etc.  Ability to run/sprint distances over a variety of terrain to answer calls quickly.  Ability to quickly traverse stairs to respond to calls, check buildings for smoke, fire and evacuation.  Ability to physically help assist students, faculty or staff having health issues to exit buildings. 
- Ability to lift gas containers and refuel vehicles.
- Must be able to walk to patrol buildings and grounds, climb stairs, run if necessary, and physically control other individuals. 
- Must be able to operate vehicles.
